August 2011
Hi Everyone, Here is the newsletter for August 2011. We have had a fantastic season so far. The tennis courts have been resprayed and are playing really well. As a direct result of this, our membership is the best it has ever been and we are picking up more members each week. The Men's team have just played their final match in Division 3 of the North East Cheshire Men's Doubles League and have survived another season in this division, finishing half way up the final results table. With some injuries and non-availability of players, this is a credible performance. Particular note goes to Andy Storer and Craig Holland for their great sets record, plus Alex Graver and Nathan Schrader for showing progress through the juniors to senior level tennis. The club has already held 2 men's singles tournaments this year. The first, in April, resulted in a final between Chris Morton and Dom O'Hara. This is scheduled for August. The second tournament was won by Phil Lodge who defeated Billy Craven 7-6 in a closely fought final tie-break. The last tournament will be on Sunday 4th September 1pm start. Alex Graver also won the Pyegrove (Glossop) Mel Harrop singles tournament. The whole of the club is doing well this year including the cricketers and bowlers who have achieved some very good results. On the pro tennis scene, Djokovic deserved his Wimbledon title as did Kvitova for the Ladies. The US Open is up next - starts 29 August!! Chris (05-08-2011)

Eleven players entered the tournament played on 21st May at Pyegrove Tennis Club Glossop. The weather was dry with a gusty wind and occasional sunshine. Alex's powerful and very consistent play was just too much for the opposition including Dominic O'Hara (Pyegrove) who lost to Alex in the final. Report by Sylvia Garratt, Pyegrove

February 2011
Hi Everyone, Winter is almost over and the tennis season is not far away. Andy Murray almost made it again at the Australian Open but was beaten by Novak Djokovic who played fantastic tennis all tournament. The way that Djokovic was playing, he would have beaten anyone on the day; he also beat Federer in straight sets in the semi. Andy has a great chance at the other slams this year. It was also refreshing to see the ladies' tennis become more interesting again. It has been confirmed that the tennis courts will be resprayed at the end of June. The financial situation has much improved and we will be able to get the work done. As a section, we need to encourage more adults to join the club. The junior section is also important and creates a lot of family memberships. Junior coaching is due to start in March. Please check the coaching page for details. Due to the increased investment in facilities we have to raise adult membership to £70 and family membership to £110. Junior and senior memberships remain the same at £30. This still gives excellent value for money. Early payment would be appreciated to help towards the respray costs. We have decided not to run any junior teams this year due to the shortage of junior girls wishing to play. The winter league have completed their matches often in bad weather - see team page for results. We should finish mid-table and with 2 outstanding teams this year, Northern 3 and Lymm, there's no possibility of promotion. The Men's North-East Cheshire team will again be run by myself, but I'm hoping to hand this over at the end of the season. The club AGM is in the pavilion at 8pm on Thursday 24th March. Please try and attend if you can. See you on court Chris (14-02-2011)
