Spring 2016

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to the start of the 2016 tennis season from all at New Mills. We have now re-established the Tennis Committee and the various tasks involved in running the club have been distributed amongst the committee members. We still need more volunteers and would particularly welcome lady members.

The courts are scheduled to be powerwashed and resprayed by Pownall Court Maintenance during the week starting 13th June. This is vital work which will protect the court surface from weather and moss erosion, whilst improving playability especially in wet weather. Can all members please pay their subscriptions early to help with the cost of the work.

We are again doing a lot of publicity using the Vistaprint leaflet which was successful last year. The courts respray should be finished just before the start of Wimbledon. To coincide with this, we plan a tennis marathon starting at dawn and finishing at dusk on Sunday 26th June. More details to follow.

Junior and adult coaching has now started with healthy numbers. With an improved court surface, this should be able to continue throughout the winter.

The Men's North East Cheshire fixtures have now started and the team have picked up a valuable away point with a draw at Ryecroft. All the home matches are scheduled for July and the team is looking to stay up in Division 2 again. The Winter League team had a fantastic season and finished 3rd in Division 4.

The club has also honoured the long service of Caroline and Andrew Morton who have been made life members. Caroline and Andrew no longer live in the area but will be popping back now and then with tennis rackets in hand.

On the international tennis scene, Rafael Nadal is back to his best clay court form and has taken the Monte Carlo Masters. He looks in good form for a tenth Roland Garros.

Overall, we are looking forward to a great summer with improved courts, many new members, social activities and team victories. Come and join us and be an integral part of tennis in High Peak 2016!!

See you on court,

Chris

Autumn 2015

Hi Everyone,

Helped by the excellent early autumn weather, junior coaching has seen very healthy numbers throughout September. The advertising leaflets we produced have also resulted in extra juniors attending.

New Mills Men's doubles team finished 6th out of 10 in the North East Cheshire League Division 2. This is an excellent result considering the very high standard of play in that division and the fact that New Mills is a small club.

We held a very enjoyable social doubles tournament on Sunday 4th October (see above). Weather permitting, similar events will be held on Sunday 1st November, Sunday 29th November (Davis Cup weekend) and Sunday 20th December. Social tennis takes place every Sunday from 11am to 1.30pm.

The winter league fixtures start this week and we are hoping to improve on our mid-table placing in Division 4. We need one or two extra ladies to play in this league. Please let Steve Graver know if interested.

As winter approaches, we will be continuing tennis when weather allows. Essential maintenance work on the courts (moss treatment) will be completed in October

See you on court,

Chris

**The Courts have now been powerwashed and are playable again**

Recently, the courts had become very slippery due to the accumulation of moss and grime. They were more or less unplayable especially after rain and no good for Winter League matches. It was time to take action. With the aid of a Brendon 100 bar power washer hired from Chapel Tool Hire and 11 volunteers helping over a 5 day period (27/2/15 - 3/3/15), the courts and surrounds were thoroughly washed and swept. The nets are up and the surface is sound. Come along and play!

New Year 2015

Hi Everyone,

A Happy New Year to all club members.

Helped by the good summer weather which extended late into autumn, we had an excellent season last year with many new members, well attended social tennis and coaching plus good team performances. The Men's North-East Cheshire team have now been promoted to division 2 of the league due to their hard efforts and finishing in 3rd place. Normally 2nd place minimum finish is required for promotion, but a team dropping out of the division above has meant that 3rd is enough. This is the highest level at which the team has played since we first started in 1988. The winter league team are also doing well and have yet to lose a match with 3 wins and a draw from 4 played.

The biggest issue that we face going into 2015 is achieving the urgent powerwashing of the courts, hopefully no later than March, so that they become fully playable again. The date will be advised and we will need lots of volunteers.

On the international tennis scene, the Australian Open has now started. Murray, Nadal, Djokovic and Wawrinka are through so far, but a shock defeat for Federer, beaten by Seppi in the third round. The women's event is quite open. Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, Petra Kvitova and newcomers Eugenie Bouchard and Simona Halep are all through to round 3.

See you on court,

Chris
